It is really challenging trying to say a complex sentence like: 'Figures published today by UCAS show that for the first time more than half a million 18 year olds are on university courses'. I have now tried recording this sentence FIVE times and each time it sounds too hard for me to say never mind my listeners understanding what I'm actually saying.


Re-write: I am going to try to make the first statement easy to hear. How about:


For the first time there are now more than half a million 18 years at university.


I can then follow it up with:


Today's UCAS figures show that ten out of twenty 18 year old are studying for degrees.



The reference to UCAS shows that the news source is reliable and trustworthy.



But this is not true for every part of Britain. In Cornwall, for example only THREE out of TWENTY 18 year are attend university whereas here in Maida Vale the figure is TWELVE out of TWENTY. Our Education correspondent, Celyn Dizon, is out and about finding why?

In collecting my 'vox pops' I asked the questions: 'What's the appeal of a university education?' and 'Aren't you bothered by the large debt entailed in studying for a degree?' As I was collecting the responses I kept the recording running knowing that I was going to edit it down to just 10-15 seconds and also not wanting to miss anything that was said by my respondents. You never know what might be said spontaneously that will sound good and it's not possible to 'do it again.'

Part of my job is to find LOCAL news items. I found this news item through the Ham&High digital newspaper.

It is about an 11 year old boy who died in a horse riding accident in Maida Vale. We decided to use this article as it is unlike anything we have, although we have a death already it is a different form as it is a murder, so this death is of a child and was ruled an accident, so I thought it would be interesting to the general public. Also as you can see it says the date of the article is the 18^th April 2015, so it is still relevant news as it happened recently.

3	Presenter: Local boy 11-year-old Medi Mehra crashed into a tree after losing control of his horse last week. Our Health Correspondent Redwan Guled is at Oxfordshire Polo Club with, William Newman, a witness to the tragic event.	11 seconds. SFX: Fade – in location sound effect.
	Health Correspondent: So tell me Mr Newman, what actually happened?	3 seconds.
	William Newman’s answer	15 seconds.
	Presenter: Thanks Redwan, this is clearly a heart-rending tragedy.	2 seconds.

We decided to interview the Groomsman of the Polo club owner where the victim died, as he was the only adult around at the time of the victim’s death. We wanted to see what he had to say about it, as he is the only one who would have an accurate description, so it was our closest way to the truth. We decided to ask him an open-ended question, as we wanted to find out as much information as possible, and this was the best way.

We devised the script and timed how long each section took to say, so we knew roughly how long it would take to record overall, however we didn’t know how long the guest answer was going to be, so i guessed around 15 seconds.
